There's no doubt that things are starting to look more positive on the pitch for Leeds United. Most of our new signings thus far have played very well, adapting to the English game very quickly and showing us what they're all about. To think that our fifteen signings only cost about a quarter of the fee wee received for Ross McCormack is incredible to say the least.
However, it's also important not to expect too much of the players at such an early stage. We must understand that it's a massive change for the Italian players, and in turn accept that there may be a transitional period before they gather any real consistency.
For me, a pivotal addition to our squad is Tommaso Bianchi. He plays a massive part defensively and at the same time makes a vast amount of passes, rarely losing possession. It was clear that we missed this type of player. Rodolph Austin has benefited greatly through his and Lewis Cook's addition as Bianchi and Cook are dealing with the defensive side of things which gives Rudy more licence to get forward, which I feel he is better at. He may be a good tackler but he's winning his tackles higher up the pitch which goes hand-in-hand with our counter-attacking style of play. When he's in defensive midfield we miss a lot of his power and capabilities to go forward, and personally I feel a lot of the game surpassed him in the defensive role.
It's early days yet, but it's all beginning to come together, and if Milanic can get things running who's to say we don't have the squad to make the play-offs this year? I'm not expecting anything as I understand that the team need to gel properly, but anything can happen if you get a few wins under the belt and grow in confidence.
We have the basis to get to the Premier League but we can only take it one game at a time. Cellino does it the right way. He believes that you shouldn't overspend in a desperate lunge to grab hold of the Promised Land, and I agree. All we can do is gradually build and get better. If we continue to improve day-to-day, week-to-week and season-to-season, surely we'll make it some day.
Bianchi has definitely been the standout (outfield) player for us this year. An accomplisehed passer, a few more on his level and no doubt we would be knocking on the door sooner rather than later. Not too sure about doukarra as a striker though, I think he's missing that vital pass and needs to utilise his power to better effect if he's to be a success.
